On August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked southwestern Haiti just 12km northeast of Saint Louis du Sud, about 125 kilometers west of the capital Port-au-Prince. The quake toppled buildings and homes and damaged infrastructure and roads, cutting off access to some roads in the southwest, and forcing many thousands to flee their homes.

There are collapsed buildings including thousands of homes, and some hospitals, schools and churches. There are 4 Nazarene districts affected and two of the four were very affected.

The Sud, Grand'Anse and Nippes areas, particularly the cities of Les Cayes, Jeremie and Anse à Veaux, were hardest hit, suffering extensive damage and destruction to buildings and homes, while in Petit-Trou-de-Nippes downed phone lines have left the city out of contact. In Port-au-Prince, the earthquake was strongly felt but no major damages have been reported so far.

The quake could not have come at a worse time for Haiti, with the political unrest and escalating gang violence which has resulted in the internal displacement of around 19,000 people in the country’s southern peninsula. In addition, the  displacement of thousands of people has created ripe conditions for a spike in COVID-19 infections, potentially overwhelming an already weak and overstretched health system that is now also providing assistance to those injured by the earthquake.

Jesus helped people where there was need, and when there was need.

NCM Canada wants to be ready to help when the need arises as well. Whether it is devestation as the result of a natural disaster, or the fall out from war - we want to be ready to go and provide the necessary help.

This is one of the reasons why we are so grateful for supporters who provide regular, monthly support.  By having funds come in on each month, we are able to have a better idea of how much we will have to work with, should an emergency occur.

NCM Canada partners with other organizations to provide the appropriate response based on the situation.

Each gift will be used as designated except where any given need has been fully met or in the case when the specified project(s) cannot be reasonably carried out, then the donor agrees that the designated gift may be used where it is needed most.
