Update February 21

There are two Nazarene churches in affected areas of Syria, and after the first tremours, the pastors andmembers of these churches immediately began serving their neighbors in need. Having escaped withoutdamage, each church is open as a shelter for people who are afraid or unable to return home, and bothcongregations are distributing hot meals and blankets. In Aleppo, church members have visited hospitals andshelters to pass out cold-weather gear, food, and medicine.

Nazarenes churches worldwide are currently engaged in relief efforts in Syria through funds and supplies. A Nazarene Compassionate Ministry partner organization in Germany, Helping Hands, coordinates deliveries ofessential items. In Jordan where the earthquake was also felt but caused little damage, churches are raisingfunds and supplies.

The Church of the Nazarene has no congregations in Türkiye. Any relief efforts there is centered on supportingour partner organizations as needed.

On Monday February 6th,  south-eastern Türkiye near the border of Syria was struck with two strong earthquakes and a series of smaller quakes.  The epicenter of the first major tremor at 7.8 magnitude was located near the city of Gaziantep at 4:17 local time. The second major tremor at 7.5 magnitude a few hours later struck the Elbistan district of Kahratmanmaras province. People were sleeping while buildings and infrastructure collapsed. The death toll was initially said to be at least 1700 people in Türkiye and another 1000 or more in Syria, but the numbers continue to rise as people are pulled from the rubble. The winter conditions make rescue challenging and more urgent.

NCM is responding. You can help in this effort by doing the following…

Pray for the people of Türkiye and Syria. Pray for those who are displaced and injured and without basic necessities. Pray for those who have lost loved ones. Pray for churches and relief organizations who are providing shelter, food and water and other basic necessities. Pray for resources to help all respond to the overwhelming needs and for security in getting resources to people in need.
