Rohingya refugees continue to flood across the border into Bangladesh. The total now is well over a half a million people who have run from their homes in Myanmar, escaping threats and violence, while watching their homes and villages burn to the ground. Many have lost loved ones. Some have gone missing or died along the way. Among them are many mothers and small children, sick, elderly and wounded.
The mass exodus of the Rohingya people is overpowering the makeshift camps set up in Bangladesh. A massive humanitarian crisis is imminent as there is lack of food, clean drinking water, shelter, and other minimal necessities for life.
Canadian Foodgrains Bank members are responding. Seven CFGB members, including NCM Canada, are combining resources in a joint food response, providing rice, lentils, cooking oil, salt, and sugar to over 4000 households (about 26,000 people) for 3 months. In addition, we are providing fortified high energy biscuits for pregnant and nursing mothers.
