A Powerful Earthquake Strikes Colombia

On August 10, 2026, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, with its epicentre near San José del Palmar, Chocó.

The earthquake caused widespread destruction across several departments, resulting in loss of life, thousands of injuries, displaced families, and significant damage to homes and infrastructure. Communities, Nazarene families and local churches were among those affected.

In the weeks since the earthquake, communities have moved from the initial emergency into the ongoing work of relief and recovery.

How Nazarene Churches Are Responding

From the first days following the earthquake, Nazarene churches in Colombia mobilized to serve their neighbours while also navigating losses within their own congregations.

Twenty-three Nazarene churches across the two affected districts have mobilized, helping collect and distribute assistance, support affected families and respond to needs within their communities.

Through three response projects, assistance has included food, water, blankets, hygiene supplies and other essential items, as well as tents and temporary housing support for families who lost their homes.

As communities move toward recovery, local churches continue walking alongside affected families and responding as needs change.

Through it all, the Church continues to be present—sharing the compassion, love, and hope of Christ.

How Canadians Can Help

Canadian donations received through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Canada will support the Colombia earthquake response being coordinated through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries.

Your generosity helps equip local churches as they respond to immediate needs and walk alongside families and communities through recovery.

As the response moves from immediate relief toward recovery, ongoing needs include temporary housing, food, water and hygiene supplies, as well as support for families working to recover their homes and livelihoods.
