A Powerful Earthquake Strikes Colombia
On August 10, 2026, a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia, with its epicentre near San José del Palmar, Chocó.
The earthquake caused widespread destruction across several departments, resulting in loss of life, thousands of injuries, displaced families, and significant damage to homes and infrastructure. Nazarene churches, pastors, and families were also among those affected, with church buildings and homes damaged or destroyed.
In the weeks since the earthquake, communities have moved from the initial emergency into the ongoing work of relief and recovery.
How Nazarene Churches Are Responding
From the first days following the earthquake, Nazarene churches in Colombia mobilized to serve their neighbours while also navigating losses within their own congregations.
Local churches and volunteers have provided food, clean water, hygiene and cleaning supplies, temporary shelter, blankets, community meals, and emotional and spiritual support. Churches have also served as collection centres, while volunteers have helped with debris removal and other practical needs.
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries continues to work alongside district leaders, pastors, and local churches to respond to identified needs and support affected families as communities move toward recovery and rebuilding.
Through it all, the Church continues to be present—sharing the compassion, love, and hope of Christ.
